artist statementThis work is an exploration mainly of two waterfront neighborhoods, Dumbo and Coney Island, that have been experiencing enormous upheaval and radical development over recent years. Working in a traditional style of photography using medium format film cameras, the images inspire a reflection back in time. In addition to single images, a series I refer to as, “Two Moments in Time, from an Equivalent View” are shot as diptychs. In these works, two images merge to form one, conveying a sense of a single image at first glance. Upon closer inspection the viewer may see that these images combine two separate moments in time, composition, and incorporate the conceptual use of a constructed landscape. All of these images, printed with archival ink on watercolor paper, exhibit a timeless quality, invoking the feeling of nostalgia. These views of New York City echo the past, drifting in and out of twilight and reemerging as fleeting moments of an earlier period. This work, I feel, is part of a journey that speak to our subconscious, and reminds us of the poignant places in our collective memory of NYC. |
